Privacy and terms

What the ACG Atlas collects (almost nothing), how submissions are handled, and why entries may contain mistakes.

The short version. I don’t track you. If you submit a dataset or a paper, your email (if you give one) stays private and is erased once I’ve reviewed your submission. The Atlas is put together from many sources, partly automatically, so it will contain mistakes. Always check the original before relying on it.

What I collect. Only what you type into the Contribute form: a DOI, and optionally an ACG sector, a note and your email. It is stored in a private database (Cloudflare D1) that only I can access. Your email is used only if I have a question about your submission, is never published, and is deleted when the submission is approved or excluded. The DOI and your note may appear in the public review record on GitHub; your email never does.

What I don’t do. No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels. This site sets no cookies of its own.

Services this site relies on. The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which keeps standard server logs. The Contribute form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to keep out bots. Pages load fonts from Google Fonts, map tiles from GBIF and Esri, and code libraries from unpkg and jsDelivr; like any website request, these services see your IP address. Each has its own privacy policy. Links to papers and datasets take you to other sites with their own policies.

Accuracy. The Atlas is provided as is, for research and education, without any warranty. Records come from DataCite, GBIF, OpenAlex, Crossref and people’s submissions, and themes, taxa and links were assigned partly by rules. There will be errors, omissions and out-of-date entries. Please verify information against the original dataset or paper before using or citing it, and tell me when something is wrong.

Not an official site. The ACG Atlas is an independent project. It is not run, endorsed or reviewed by Área de Conservación Guanacaste, SINAC or MINAE (Costa Rica), or by Virginia Commonwealth University.

Content and copyright. The Atlas links to datasets and papers; it does not host them. Each belongs to its authors and keeps its own license and citation. Catalog metadata is released under CC0. If you are an author and want a record corrected or removed, contact me and I will act on it promptly.

Contact. (or a GitHub issue for anything that can be public).
